Viracea is listed as an ingredient – what is it?
Viracea®, a natural botanical formula, is a patented blend of Echinacea Extract and other natural ingredients with the FDA approved OTC antimicrobial skin antiseptic Benzalkonium Chloride.

  • In clinical studies, Viracea® demonstrated high effectiveness as a safe treatment to speed the healing (on average 72 hours) of herpes lesions.
  • In laboratory research Viracea® was tested effective against both (herpes) HSV1 and HSV2.
  • Viracea® is highly active against herpes strains which are resistant to treatment with Acyclovir*.

See endnotes 1 and 2 for source publications.

What are the other active ingredients?
  • Benzalkonium chloride is an approved active ingredient under the FDA OTC antimicrobial/Antiseptic Monographs.
  • Allantoin is an FDA approved OTC ingredient under the Skin Protectant Monograph. It is used as a soothing skin protectant.
  • Potassium sorbate is a natural preservative.
  • Methyl and propyl parabens are used as preservatives. They were formerly derived from blueberries. However, today they are synthesized.
Concern for parabens was raised subsequent to a study that showed parabens in breast tissue. However, that study neglected to disclose that parabens occur naturally in numerous substances including many fruits and vegetables. It may just be natural to find parabens in any human tissue. Also, the study never demonstrated a direct link to parabens being a cause of breast cancer.
